Dream Killers: How to Defeat Them

I was compelled to write this to all the people who encounter the doubters but I like to refer to them as dream killers. Yes people there are people out there who are only waiting to hear about your plans only to trample upon them with their selfishness. I want to tell you about a conversation I had with a young man in Port of Spain outside the National Library on January 4, 2017.

This young man is a fellow chess player like me. He said, he had to play a Fide Master in the National Chess Championships. He said when other chess players heard that he had to play the Fide Master, they told the young man he had no chance and he will lose. I had to set him straight. I told him to stop worrying about the fact that you have to play a Fide Master and prepare yourself for the tournament. I told him to stop worrying about the player’s status however, he should remove fear from his mind. I told him about what a deceased friend of ours used to say. I told him, “bois man doh fear bois man” (Bois is a term used to refer to the “stick” in stick fighting. During the Carnival season, there is the annual stick fighting competition in Trinidad and Tobago). The quote simply means “fear no man”.

He kept lamenting on what people told him it was impossible for him to win. I told him *anyone who tells him “he cannot do it or it is impossible*, to love them from a distance”.  He asked me “even if it is the whole world”. I replied to him “to hell with them and get it done”. I went so far to quote a verse from the Bible which reads “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God. Our words is a manifestation of ourselves, so if you say “I can’t” or “I doubt I can do it” then you would not get it done, but if you say “Yes I can do it” or “Yes, I will do it”, then you will be able to get it done. Have faith in yourself that you have the ability to achieve anything that you desire.

To you the reader, I want you to examine yourself. Guard your dreams jealously, plan, work your plan and do not be afraid to make mistakes. If you do, correct it. If you don’t know how to get it done, research it or ask people who have the “experience” to mentor you and “no adviser”, please!*

Write down your dreams and desires and recite them to yourself every morning and evening believe it and remember, do it with a smile. Take care.

{*}     People who want to advise you and they have NO CLUE about the subject matter.
